In OLED displays, when portraying black, pixels deactivate entirely, resulting in vastly enhanced contrast compared to LCDs.

Viewing angles play a crucial role in the overall viewing experience of a screen. When observing a display from an angle, you may notice degradation in image quality, such as washout or shadows. This phenomenon highlights the importance of wider viewing angles, which ensure consistent image quality regardless of the viewer’s position.

OLED displays, due to their lack of backlight and thinner profile, inherently boast wider viewing angles compared to traditional LCD displays. Images on OLED screens maintain their clarity and readability from almost any viewing position, unlike standard LCDs, which may suffer from distortion and color loss when viewed off-center.

Lifespan

LCDs have a longer history in the market compared to OLEDs, providing ample data to support their longevity. On average, LCDs have demonstrated approximately 60,000 hours (equivalent to 2,500 days) of operational lifespan, translating to around 7 years of consistent performance. While some dimming of the backlight may occur over time, it typically does not significantly impact display quality.

OLEDs, being a newer entrant in the display market, present challenges in fully assessing their longevity. Continual advancements in OLED technology and the relatively short time since their introduction make it difficult to thoroughly evaluate their performance. Present-day OLEDs are estimated to maintain consistent performance for 100,000 hours with proper maintenance, equivalent to 10 hours a day over 10 years.

However, it’s crucial to consider OLED’s susceptibility to image burn-in. Prolonged display of static images can result in permanent afterimages on the screen due to the organic material used in these displays. The lifespan of an OLED varies depending on usage, with static image display potentially diminishing longevity compared to dynamic, constantly changing content.
